2010 Lexus HS250h

Luxury hybrids are nothing new to Lexus. The 2010 HS250h 4-door sedan unveiled today in Detroit marks the company’s fourth foray into hybrid vehicles. What makes this particular hybrid unique, though, is that it’s the first dedicated luxury hybrid, meaning that it hasn’t been spawned from a traditionally propelled Lexus variant. Even more impressive, the entire car was sketched to minimize impact on the environment, right down to eco-friendly interior materials. The HS250h is powered by the first 4-cylinder engine ever to find its way into the nose of a Lexus in the U.S. The 2.4-liter Atkinson-cycle engine develops 187 horsepower, thanks to a few extra ponies provided by the electric motor. A few tricks such as variable valve timing, super-slick balanced internals and an exhaust heat recovery system help the car offer 30 percent better fuel economy than the 2009 IS 250 RWD, and allow the car to run on 87 octane fuel. That means this svelte 4-door is looking at better than 35 mpg highway, and that’s good news.As previously mentioned, Lexus tackled the entire HS250h project with fuel efficiency in mind. That means electric power steering to reduce engine load, a slippery shape to cut down on aerodynamic drag, and an infrared-ray resistant windshield to keep the cabin cool during hot months. A cooler cabin means less use of the air conditioning and an easier-breathing ride. Lexus even tackled the headlights, swapping the standard bulbs for offering optional LED units that draw less juice. You’re probably wondering what the deal is with those “green” interior components. Don’t worry, worry; Lexus won’t have you sitting on seats made of milk thistle. Instead, the company has used an impressive amount of plant-based ecological plastics. What’s the difference? The new stuff gives off significantly less carbon dioxide over its life span than petroleum-based variants. Roughly 30 percent of the plastics in the passenger cabin and the cargo area are made from the eco-plastics.While most dedicated hybrids force their occupants to endure some sort of discomfort be it a noisy ride, lousy acceleration or uncomfortable seats Lexus aims to prove “luxury” and “green” aren’t mutually exclusive. The interior of the HS250h delivers all of the plush comforts that are synonymous with the brand. Now we’re just wondering how Lexus plans on spinning leather seats as eco-friendly. The new hybrid Lexus should show up on dealer lots by midsummer late summer 2009, so you can stop in and ask.
